Taking the Plunge into Mural Painting

This summer, I stepped outside my studio comfort zone and took an intensive mural painting course at Laney College. What began as an “Introduction” class turned into a monumental project: a 200 ft wide by 30 ft tall public mural!

I was responsible for a 24×20 ft section featuring the Berkeley City College owl mascot. Working 20 feet up on scaffolding—wrestling with rough concrete texture, summer heat, and high winds—was a physical challenge like no other. In fine art studio painting, you step back constantly to evaluate your work; on a scaffold, you climb down after hours of work to finally see the big picture.

Standing on the ground and seeing my giant owl come to life was both humbling and exhilarating. It was an incredible trial by fire that confirmed I definitely want mural painting to be a part of my art business. To build my momentum and get used to working at this scale, I’m excited to begin by offering custom interior murals for homes and businesses as I expand my portfolio!
