Caring for Your New Artwork: A Collector’s Guide

Thank you so much for bringing one of my original oil paintings into your home! I paint with rich, joyful colors to bring lasting life to a space. Because all my paintings are created on durable canvas board and come professionally framed, they are built to last—but they do need the right environment to thrive.

Here is how to easily protect and preserve your new painting so it stays as vibrant as the day it left my studio.

1. Gentle Dusting Only

Over time, ambient dust will naturally settle on the textured surface of the oil paint.

  • Use a soft brush: The safest method is to sweep a clean, dry, soft artist brush gently across the surface.
  • Skip the cloths: Never use microfiber cloths, paper towels, or dusters. Their fibers can snag on the peaks of the paint texture.
  • No liquids: Never use water, damp cloths, or household cleaning sprays. Moisture can warp the canvas board or ruin the paint layers.

2. Keep Out of Direct Sunshine

While I love how light interacts with oil paint, UV rays are its enemy over time.

  • Avoid hot spots: Hanging your painting in direct, intense sunlight can cause the pigments to fade and the paint to crack from heat expansion.
  • Best placement: Choose a spot with ambient, indirect light where the colors can glow safely without direct sun exposure.

3. Avoid Oily and Humid Spaces

Where you display your artwork matters just as much as how you clean it.

  • Keep away from kitchens: Cooking releases airborne grease and oily residue that creates a sticky, damaging film on the painting.
  • Avoid damp zones: Do not hang original art in bathrooms or high-moisture areas, as humidity encourages mold and mildew growth.
  • Watch the heat: Avoid hanging pieces directly over radiators, heating vents, or active fireplaces where intense dry heat and soot can damage the frame.

Handling Your Piece

When unboxing or hanging your new artwork, always hold it by the outer sides of the frame with clean, dry hands to keep natural skin oils off the surface.

Thank you again for supporting my art practice and welcoming my work into your life. Enjoy your new view!
